Government to Permanently Ban Some Chinese Apps Including TikTok: Report
The Indian government has sent notices to Chinese app makers, including TikTok and others, making the interim ban on these apps now permanent, according to a Business Standard report.
"We are evaluating the notice TikTok was one of the first companies to comply with the Government of India directive issued on June 29, 2020. We continually strive to comply with local laws and regulations and do everything possible to address any concerns the government may have. Ensuring the privacy and security of all of our users remains our top priority, "a TikTok spokesperson said in the report.
The Indian government released its first list of banned apps on June 29, 2020, in which 59 apps were banned, including TikTok, ShareIt, UC Browser, Shein, Likee, and CamScanner.
The ban was seen as a response by India to its clashes in Ladakh's Galway Valley. According to the official statement released by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeITY) on the ban, the apps were "detrimental to the sovereignty and integrity of India,
All were prohibited under Section 69A of the Information Technology (IT) Act.
The second list of banned apps was released on September 5 with 188 apps and the third list with 43 apps came out on November 24. These bans were also made under new report 2021 Section 69A of the Information Technology (IT) Act.
